  • Piel de Sapo is a rare, deliciously sweet and juicy muskmelon from the 1800s that originates in Spain.
  • The name Piel de Sapo translates to "frog skin" in Spanish, referring to the melon's rough, slightly textured green skin.
  • This melon is also known as "Santa Claus melon" or "Christmas melon" due to its long shelf life.
  • Piel de Sapo grows to about 40cm in length and is ovoid in shape.
  • It has a thick, green-striped outer rind and pale green to white inner flesh with a mild melon flavour and sweetness.
  • Piel de Sapo matures about 110 days after planting.
  • It is ripe when it has a deep yellow shade, not just green, and the blossom end is slightly soft to gentle pressure.
  • Unlike other melons, the ripe melon won't release a strong aroma.

Culinary Uses

  • Piel de Sapo is described as similar than a honeydew melon but sweeter, with notes of pear.
  • They can be eaten cold in summer or room temperature in winter.
