Description
- Perennial
- Pelargonium tetragonum is a rare and unusual semi-succulent shrub native to the dry, rocky regions of the Cape Provinces in South Africa.
- Because of its unique adaptations, Pelargonium tetragonum thrives in the same conditions as cacti and succulents – it is not a typical bedding geraniums.
- It is highly sought after by plant collectors for its unique, architectural growth habit that closely resembles an Euphorbia rather than a traditional geranium.
- Pelargonium tetragonum is distinguished by its almost leafless, green three- to four-angled, jointed and succulent stems.
- When present, the leaves are fleshy, palm-shaped and sometimes have red zonal markings.
- It bears large delicate cream to pink flowers from September to December that look like butterflies at the tips of the stems.
- If supported by other vegetation, it will reach a height of 2 m.
- Keep in full sun to bright, direct light to maintain its rigid stem structure and promote optimal flowering.
- It needs well-draining soil and water sparingly during the warm growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering cycles.
- The leaves are often dropped during dry periods to conserve water.
- In the winter, keep the plant almost entirely dry to prevent root rot.
- Pelargonium tetragonum handles pruning well and can be trimmed back after flowering to manage its gangly habit.
- It is easily propagated by taking softwood stem cuttings, allowing them to callously dry for a day or two, and rooting them in damp river sand.
